Carrying Water Bottles

!Conditional — Depends

Full bottles banned at security; empty bottles allowed and can be refilled post-screening.

Bring an empty bottle through security, then refill it at airport fountains or kiosks. Full bottles over 100ml are confiscated, while medicinal/infant water is allowed if declared.

Key highlights

  • Empty the bottle completely—even small amounts trigger disposal.
  • Detach any filters so officers can inspect them separately.
  • Keep the lid off when placing it on the tray if asked.

The liquid rule covers ordinary water too. Security can’t test every full bottle without delaying the queue, so they simply ask you to empty it. Arrive with an empty flask and you’ll fly through.

Airports now provide filtered water stations inside the sterile area. Some even announce chilled vs warm dispensers for baby formula. Carry a bottle with a wide mouth so you can fill it quickly without spillage.

If you need water for medicine or baby formula during security, declare it. Officers may let you keep sealed medicinal water or taste-test it before clearing.

When allowed vs. when not

When it's allowed

  • Carry stainless or BPA-free bottles with leak-proof lids.
  • Use collapsible bottles if packing space is tight.
  • Sanitise the mouthpiece before refilling to avoid airport germs.

🚫 When it's NOT allowed

  • Don’t hide water inside opaque thermos flasks—officers will open them anyway.
  • Don’t rely solely on airline service; delays happen.
  • Avoid placing bottles near laptops in trays; they can roll off and crack screens.

After security

  • Use refill stations or ask cafe staff for filtered water.
  • Label the bottle with your name; many travellers carry similar flasks.
  • Refill again before boarding—aircraft water service can be slow if turbulence hits.
